Registering With the State

Post a comment or ask a follow-up question

Question: Can you give me direction on registering with my state?

Answer: Homeschooling laws vary from state to state. We suggest you go to the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) website. There you can find a summary of the laws for your state, as well as websites for state and some local homeschool organizations. It would be wise to contact your state homeschool organization to get specifics on your state's laws.

Whatever is required of you is handled directly with your local school system. We highly recommend that you give only the information that is required by law. Some school districts that are particularly anti-homeschooling try to intimidate parents by asking for more information than required. In some states, a mere notification is required, but the district may imply that they have the authority to approve or deny your homeschooling. Again, know the law and do only what is required of you.

Very few people actually have problems with their school district. However, we do recommend that you become a member of HSLDA. If you have any conflict, they can generally resolve it for you quickly. Please note that if you wait until after you have a problem with your district to contact HSLDA, they may or may not help you.
