Workshop Descriptions

Friday

Pre-Conference Workshops:

Steve & Carol Ryerson ~ "Help! I'm Starting To Home School!" ~ "It's such a big job and I don't know where to start. I don't want to mess up my children." If you are early in your process of home schooling, or are thinking about it, and you are bothered by these kinds of thoughts, then you need this session.

Rhonda Bowling & Julia Bowling ~ "Choosing Curriculum: Charting Your Course With Confidence!" ~ Have you ever walked through a 300-booth vendor hall at a homeschool convention? Or thumbed through the three-inch thick catalog from Rainbow Resource? Or innocently typed "homeschool curriculum" into an online search engine? We can all relate to the overwhelming feelings of confusion and intimidation that assault both new and veteran homeschool parents. In this session, Sis. Rhonda Bowling will share what she has learned during her 19 years of choosing homeschool curriculum. She will discuss the different types of curriculum and how to best use what one finally chooses to purchase. Sis. Rhonda will have curriculum available for participants to browse and endeavor to answer your questions.

Friday Evening:

Keynote ~ Jeff Brickle ~ "God's Vision for the Apostolic Family: Challenges, Promises, and Dreams"

Saturday

General Session I

Jeff Brickle ~ "Getting the Household in Order: Discipleship, Evangelism, and the Spiritual Life" ~ The Shema (Deut. 6:4-8) calls parents to turn their attention to the training of their children. This session will uncover scriptural basis for instruction and spirituality within the family unit. When God's ordained order in the home is followed and applied, true revival will inevitably follow.

Workshop Session 1

Panel moderated by Kevin Bowling ~ "Technology in the Home ~ Using and Controlling Electronic Media" ~ Many tasks can be done more easily and quickly today with internet technology from banking and paying bills to research and shopping. Other electronic media such as video games, ipods, and cell phones continue to expand their capabilities and usefulness. This panel will discuss how families can meet the challenges of effectively using and controlling electronic technology in the home.

Arthur Vanderhoff ~ "Paul vs. Misogyny" ~ In this session, Bro. Vanderhoff will discuss the difficult passages in Paul's Epistles concerning women's role in the New Testament church era. God's Word is clear. Unfortunately, there is much misunderstanding in modern times regarding how these scriptures should be applied. Bro. Vanderhoff will strive to bring clarity through the tools of history, solid rules of Bible interpretation, and the illumination of the Holy Spirit.

David Huston ~ "American's Christian Roots" ~ Is America a Christian nation? Was it ever? Many people today cannot answer these questions. In this session, Dave Huston will explore what we mean when we call our country a "Christian nation" and will review some of the important principles that underlie our Constitutional system. Understanding these principles has become more vital than ever as the roots of our nation are being relentlesschopped away by ruthless politicians and ideologues.

Workshop Session 2

Jeff Brickle ~ "Eat This Book: The Discipline of Internalizing the Word" ~ Both the prophets Ezekiel (Ezek. 3:1-4) and John (Rev. 10:8-11) were admonished to eat scrolls. Before they could effectively deliver their potent messages, they first had to personally ingest the words. In this session we will examine the biblical mandate for internalizing scripture and the role this essential practice should assume in remapping our hearts, minds, and homes.

Gary Ellis ~ "Making Marriage Work" ~ God had an original design and purpose for marriage. Discover why so many Christian marriages fail and how following God's original plan will make every marriage work.

Carol Ryerson ~ "What's Going On In Your Temple?" ~ We frequently hear that some foods are good for us and others are not. But why? This session will look into how a few specific "good" foods and "problem" foods affect our temples.

General Session II

David Huston ~ "Holding Onto Christian Values In a Decaying World" ~ The world around us is changing rapidly. And for those of us who love the Lord, most of this change is worrisome. How do believers hold onto their values? How do we foster a spiritual mind-set in our children when they are exposed to so much ungodliness? In this session, Dave Huston will explore some practical ways of maintaining wholesome Christian values in an age of rapid decay.

Workshop Session 3

Steve Ryerson ~ "What In the World Were You Thinking?!" ~ We apostolics normally grasp the importance of separating ourselves from the world in areas such as modesty. But, in some other areas such as law, finance, government, and science, we don't understand as easily why it's important to think Biblically. We'll work on the foundation in areas like these.

Yvette Ellis ~ "Pouring" ~ Luke 10:38-42 and 2 Kings 4 ~ We start out with the best intentions to serve those around us...but become so consumed with the mechanics and details of our work that we begin to feel pulled apart and lose sight of why we were serving in the first place. When the explosion comes, because of the frustration of being "cumbered," we explode on Jesus. The real problem is I have allowed my "to do" list to pull me apart and distract me from the only thing in this world that really matters ~ knowing Jesus, listening to Jesus, having relationship with Jesus.

David Huston ~ "Male Leadership In the Home" ~ Many homes in our society are plagued by weak and ineffectual fathers and husbands, and this includes many apostolic homes. This session will focus on God's expectations for men and why they must step up to the plate and fulfill their calling in these troublesome days. Due to the direct nature of this session, it will be limited to men over the age of 13.

Workshop Session 4

Jeff Brickle ~ "Blessed Is the Man That...Hagahs Day and Night" ~ In Psalm 1 the righteous man not only rejects the ways of the ungodly but discovers extreme delight in hagah-ing, the art of ruminating on God's Torah or instruction. Unlike Eastern meditative prectices, which falsely claim to lead to mystical oneness with the universe, true biblical meditation entails deeply pondering and walking in God's Word. In this session we will examine the biblical foundation for hagah-ing and consider ways in which our families can learn and apply this life-changing skil.

Gary Ellis ~ "Let's Do It Again" ~ Conflict is an inevitable reality in any relationship. Unresolved conflict has the potential of destroying even the best of marriages. Find out how conflict can lead to new discoveries, and godly resolution principle can help your marriage experience a refreshing new start.

Carol Ryerson ~ "Make Melody In Your Heart To the Lord In Your Home" ~ The Bible tells us to make melody in our hearts to the Lord. But, if you are not musically trained, how can you pass a love of music on to your children? Learn some helpful, specific ideas you can use.
